I’ve noticed that everyone taking on a project, whether Pro or DIY, has their own building techniques and every project seems to require a unique approach.

To accommodate all this individuality, Post Protector offers (2) different products to eliminate ground contact and provide maximum post longevity performance.

Our original, and most popular, 60″ & 42″ ‘Post Protector’ provide a ‘physical barrier’ that encapsulates the entire post, has an integral post uplift protection feature & come with uplift protection hardware, minimizes chemical leaching, & provides weed-eater protection.

We also offer the 30″ ‘Grade Guard’ that takes an even simpler approach. Regardless of post embedment depth, be it 6′ on a pole barn project or 2 1/2′ on the a fence project, it’s positioned so 4″- 6″ is above grade/finished floor grade. Providing a ‘physical barrier’ that targets the most decay prone region of the post and provides weed-eater protection.

Because the decay hazards are severe, wood in GROUND CONTACT requires MAXIMUM chemical preservative retention.

That said, it probably makes good sense to LOSE the whole ‘GROUND CONTACT’ thing!

Here’s what chemical preservative manufacturers have to say about adding ‘barrier’ protection to work with their preservative:

“Barrier systems prevent the invasion of wood-destroying fungi and termites which typically occurs as the preservative migrates from the wood leaving it vulnerable to attack.”

Here’s what Wood Scientists’ studies show:

#1 Oregon State University

‘Barrier’ Protectors were placed on both treated and untreated wood in-soil contact.

NO attempt was made to keep water from entering the upper open end of the Protectors.

The ‘barrier’ Protectors effectively prevented any fungal attack, even on the untreated stakes, by acting as an additional layer of protection against soil dwelling fungi.

In comparison, the unprotected stakes showed evidence of attack.”

“Pole failure can be prevented if soil fungi are excluded from post contact.

Field trials proved that ‘barrier’ protection prevented access of decay fungi to poles.

Mailbox Post Decay; Replacement with Post Protector

Berks County, PA: Homeowner & DIY Guy, JC, happened to be looking out the window as a strong wind gust took out his decay ravaged mailbox post.

His home was built in 2005 making the post’s service life a little over 12 years. He sensibly replaced the post using Post Protector & was kind enough to send these pics.
