  • Another Victory for Post Frame Construction

Foundation Comparison: The Common Goal, Eliminate Soil-to-Wood Contact

FOUNDATION COMPARISON Post Protector, Pier and Bracket, Continuous

Peoria County, IL: Post Protector customer, J. Ray, wanted a foundation for his 30’x40′, post frame, starter home to be Void of Soil-Contact. So these are the (3) foundation options he received from his builder. Each options’ intent is to eliminate soil-to-wood contact. No need to look at very expensive / complicated methods to accomplish this. Post Protector is obviously the simplest, most affordable, and strongest way to get the job done!

We are all attracted to post frame construction for the simplicity, speed, design flexibility, and, most importantly, the impressive Value.

But there’s one very important component, the direct-burial, post-foundation, that has curiously avoided significant improvement despite the fact that this construction type has grown to become far more sophisticated & improvements made in all other areas.

Post foundation improvement is especially important as a direct soil-to-post foundation was never the best scenario & we’ve seen the chemical preservatives become more environmentally friendly but decay-fighting performance has suffered.

Post Protector provides simple, slide-on “barrier” protection to exclude soil-to-post contact & by isolating the post, decay-fungi & insects have no access. Moreover, chemical preservatives are confined to the post.

Lastly, it’s foundation/investment protection post frame consumers want at a justifiable price point!

With Post Protector… Exclude Soil-to-Post Contact… Preserve ‘Post Frame’ Simplicity, Speed, & Value!

Post Protector on Eagle Scout’s Owls Nest Project

Orange County, CA: Eagle Scout Service Project – Proud father, EH, and his obviously on-the-ball, Eagle Scout son were kind enough to share pics of his recently completed community service project.

The Eagle Scout service project is to demonstrate and develop leadership skills. Related to this are important lessons in project management and taking responsibility for a significant accomplishment.

He decided to build owls nests in 3 locations, featuring a twin 4″ x 4″ post foundation with a hinged center post for easy nest maintenance.

So he and his DIY dad did their due diligence to establish the best plan / materials to complete the job to the highest level of quality.

Needless to say, we were proud to be a part of his project & accomplishment.

“We wanted to be sure the the nests would stand the test of time and that starts with a solid foundation. Post Protector was simple way for us to make that happen. The product was easy to use, worked as perfectly as we thought it would, & will obviously make our foundation posts last.”

Good stuff!

Post Protector…. the PERFECT complement to an in-ground pressure treated or cedar post.

I’ve noticed that everyone taking on a project, whether Pro or DIY, has their own building techniques and every project seems to require a unique approach.

To accommodate all this individuality, Post Protector offers (2) different products to eliminate ground contact and provide maximum post longevity performance.

Our original, and most popular, 60″ & 42″ ‘Post Protector’ provide a ‘physical barrier’ that encapsulates the entire post, has an integral post uplift protection feature & come with uplift protection hardware, minimizes chemical leaching, & provides weed-eater protection.

We also offer the 30″ ‘Grade Guard’ that takes an even simpler approach. Regardless of post embedment depth, be it 6′ on a pole barn project or 2 1/2′ on the a fence project, it’s positioned so 4″- 6″ is above grade/finished floor grade. Providing a ‘physical barrier’ that targets the most decay prone region of the post and provides weed-eater protection.

The good news, both are super effective & affordable, ridiculously simple-to-install, & beyond sensible.

Post Protector & Grade Guard… perfectly complement pressure treated or cedar posts.

Clearly, a MUCH better way to approach a deck, fence, pole barn, or ANY post-foundation project!

Eliminate soil-to-wood contact /decay with Post Protector

So why add Post Protector to eliminate Ground/Soil-to-Wood contact? Here’s one ‘pretty good’ reason:

“All treated poles eventually lose resistance to decay and insect infestation. Decay of treated poles is a gradual deterioration caused by Soil-Dwelling Fungi and other low forms of plant life. Damage by Soil-Dwelling Insect attack (termites, ants and wood borers) is considered jointly with decay because preservative treatment of wood is designed to resist both soil-fungi and insect attack.” (US Department of Agriculture)

Post Protector simply provides a physical “barrier” separating the post from soil and all the decay/degradation hazards it harbors.

Because the decay hazards are severe, wood in GROUND CONTACT requires MAXIMUM chemical preservative retention.

That said, it probably makes good sense to LOSE the whole ‘GROUND CONTACT’ thing!

“Barrier protection will substantially increase the lifespan of any pole by protecting it from fungal & insect attack far more effectively than a preservative treatment alone can achieve while preventing preservatives from leaching into the environment.”

Post Protector In-Ground Post Installation I

These cross-sections show typical installation detail for ‘outdoor’ post applications such as decks, fences, pergolas, mailbox posts to name a few.

The first image represents our 42″ Post Protector and the second, our 30″ Grade Guard product.

Here’s what chemical preservative manufacturers have to say about adding ‘barrier’ protection to work with their preservative:

“Barrier protection will substantially increase the lifespan of any pole by protecting it from fungal & insect attack far more effectively than a preservative treatment alone can achieve while preventing preservatives from leaching into the environment.”

“Barrier systems prevent the invasion of wood-destroying fungi and termites which typically occurs as the preservative migrates from the wood leaving it vulnerable to attack.”

Here’s what Wood Scientists’ studies show:

#1 Oregon State University

‘Barrier’ Protectors were placed on both treated and untreated wood in-soil contact.

NO attempt was made to keep water from entering the upper open end of the Protectors.

The ‘barrier’ Protectors effectively prevented any fungal attack, even on the untreated stakes, by acting as an additional layer of protection against soil dwelling fungi.

In comparison, the unprotected stakes showed evidence of attack.”

#2 Dr. Albin Baecker

“Pole failure can be prevented if soil fungi are excluded from post contact.

Field trials proved that ‘barrier’ protection prevented access of decay fungi to poles.

Preservatives are designed to prevent decay of in-service poles, but treated poles may fail prematurely through insect and fungal attack.

The ‘barrier’ protector is a biotechnological device that prevents insect and fungal attack, while simultaneously acting as an environmental barrier, which confines the preservative to the pole.”

Post Protectors are available in popular solid and laminated post sizes.

Also, commonly used for pole barn post protection as well.

Post Protector is available for on-line purchase through Home Depot, Lowe’s, and Amazon.

Please feel free to call to discuss your project and specific Post Protector / Grade Guard installation recommendations.
